Unlike an intaglio print such as a mezzotint or etching, where the ink is forced into lines cut into the plate. Linocuts are relief prints, the ink sits on the surface of the plate, any areas cut away from the block do not pick up any ink. The prints I make are all reduction prints, sometimes called elimination or suicide prints. Unlike prints such as Japanese Woodblock prints where a block is cut for each colour, reduction prints are all printed using the same block. Cutting and printing the colours sequentially working from light to dark and gradually building up the image. As shown below:
